Kindred

Several words are rendered “kindred” in the King James Version. אח, 'āḥ, “brother,” was used loosely among Hebrews for a member of the same tribe or family, a relative; and is once translated “kindred” (1Ch_12:29 the King James Version). Once also somewhat loosely as the translation of מודעת, mōdha‛ath, literally, “acquaintance” (Rth_3:2; compare same root in Rth_2:1, rendered “kinsman”); once, for the, figurative expression, “men of thy redemption” (משׁפּלּה, ge'ullāh, referring to the law of the redemption of land by kinsmen, Lev_25:25). The two most common words for kindred are:

(1) מולדת, mōledheth, “related by birth” (Gen_12:1; Gen_24:4, Gen_24:7; Gen_31:3, Gen_31:13; Gen_32:9; Gen_43:7; Num_10:30; Est_2:10, Est_2:20; Est_8:6);

(2) משׁפּחה, mishpāḥāh, “family” (Gen_24:38, Gen_24:40, Gen_24:41; Jos_6:23; Rth_2:3; 1Ch_16:28; Job_32:2; Psa_22:27; Psa_96:7).

In the New Testament (several times), γένος, génos, “kindred by birth,” so, of same family, tribe or race (Act_4:6; Act_7:13, Act_7:19 the Revised Version (British and American) “race”); so also συγγένεια, suggéneia (Luk_1:61; Act_7:3, Act_7:14). In the King James Version φυλή, phulḗ, “tribe,” rendered “kindred” (Rev_1:7; Rev_5:9; Rev_7:9; Rev_11:9; Rev_13:7; Rev_14:6), but better “tribe” as in the Revised Version (British and American). πατριά, patriá, rendered “kindred” in Act_3:25, is better “families,” as in the Revised Version (British and American).
