mat´an (מתּן, mattān, “a gift”):
(1) A priest in the house of Baal, slain by Jehoiada before Baal's altar during the reformation under Jehoiada (2Ki_11:18; 2Ch_23:17).
(2) The father of Shephatiah a contemporary and persecutor of Jeremiah (Jeremiah 38:1), one of those who put Jeremiah into Malechiah's dungeon (Jeremiah 38:6).
(3) The son of Eleazar, and father of Jacob, who was the father of Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary (Matthew 1:15).
