mḗ-rō´dak, mer´ṓ-dak (מרדך, merōdhākh, "Death" ; "slaughter"):

The supreme deity of the Babylonians (Jeremiah 50:2); the Nimrod of Genesis 10:8-12; and among the constellations, Orion. Probably the planet Mars (Jeremiah 50:2), or it may be another name of Bel, the guardian divinity of Babylon. This name frequently occurs as a surname to the kings of Assyria and Babylon.

See Astronomy, II., 11.; Religion Of Babylonia And Assyria, Nimrod.
